Scott Tingley was elected as your Salt Lake County Auditor in November 2014 and sworn into office in January 2015. His campaign was based on bringing a higher level of professionalism and actual auditing experience to the Salt Lake County Auditor’s Office with the slogan, “It’s time we elected an Auditor for Salt Lake County Auditor.”
Over the last four years, Scott has worked hard to bring integrity and leadership back to the Auditor’s office. He understands the importance of having an independent, elected auditor to hold county government accountable while promoting transparency and openness for the citizens of Salt Lake County.
With over 11 years of government auditing work experience at Salt Lake County, Scott has had the opportunity to interact with county elected officials and employees at all levels. He has managed and overseen dozens of different types of audit projects within a wide variety of county departments, divisions, and programs. Scott also has extensive investigative experience and has worked directly with the F.B.I., the U.S. Attorney’s Office, and the District Attorney’s Office, gathering evidence and successfully prosecuting county employees accused of fraud, waste, or abuse of public funds.
Scott gained extensive property tax experience while working for several years in the Salt Lake County Assessor’s Office. In the Assessor’s Office he worked as a Business Personal Property Auditor, and then became the Business Personal Property Audit Manager, supervising the personal property audit team for the office. During his time with the Assessor’s Office, Scott earned the Personal Property Appraiser designation from the Utah State Tax Commission and passed all four of the rigorous exams to earn the Machinery and Equipment Appraisal and Valuation designation from the American Society of Appraisers (ASA).
As your Salt Lake County Auditor, Scott is a member of several advisory committees at Salt Lake County, including the Property Tax Committee, the Debt Review Committee (Chair, 2017), the Revenue Committee, the Information Technology Advisory Board, and the Steering Committee to name a few. These committees advise and support the county council and county leaders in making sound policy decisions regarding the future direction of Salt Lake County government.
Scott has earned his Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), and Certified Government Auditing Professional (CGAP) professional auditor designations. He is an active member of the Salt Lake City Chapter of the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA), the Utah Chapter of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE), and the Utah Government Auditors Association (UGAA). He earned his Bachelor of Science in Accounting degree in 2007, and his Master of Science in Accounting degree in 2009, while working full-time and raising his family.
